Sligo footballer Johnny Martyn is recovering in hospital following a stroke according to today's Irish Independent. Martyn suffered his first stroke just under two years ago about eight days before his county faced Cork in the All-Ireland Qualifiers in 2014.
He felt unwell while warming up to come on against Leitrim with 20 minutes to play in the FBD League game last Sunday. He was treated by the team doctor Declan Clinton and brought to hospital where he will continue to be monitored over the coming days.
Martyn had played for Sligo in their two opening games of the FBD League this month.
He made a remarkable recovery from his first stroke in July 2014. He was hospitalised after suffering the stroke during training and subsequently diagnosed with a hole in his heart which could cause clots that triggered the stroke. He had surgery this time last year and made his comeback just two months afterwards.
The paper reports that Sligo sources have confirmed that he is making a good recovery but it is unclear at this early stage if he will be able to resume his playing career.
Meanwhile it has also emerged that Sligo manager Niall Carew is hoping to have star forward David Kelly back for some of their league games.
Kelly, who works in Athlone, is understood to have left the panel for a period as he is tied up with work for the immediate future.
However Carew has dismissed speculation that there has been a falling out between the management team and Kelly.
