A Ballaghaderreen man is to receive the Freedom of Roscommon for his contribution to the arts.

89-year old Brian O’Doherty has lived in New York for the past 50 years, and is a renowned artist, art critic, author and academic.

Some of his art work is on display in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Pompidou in Paris and the Hugh Lane gallery in Dublin, while he was previously nominated for the Booker prize.

At a meeting of Roscommon County Council this week, members voted unanimously to confer the Freedom of Roscommon on the Ballaghadereen native.

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Orla Leyden proposed the motion, and told Midwest News that they hope Brian O’Doherty may be able to travel home for a ceremony later this year.
