Central Council meeting of GAA agrees in principal to accept proposals from FRC to complete club championship activity in same calendar year

Arising from today’s Central Council meeting, which was specially convened to consider the proposals of the FRC (Part II), it was agreed, in principle, to accept its proposal to complete all club championship activity in both football and hurling in the same calendar year.

A special group is to be established by the tUachtarán and Ard Stiúrthóir which will conduct a full examination of how the proposal can best be implemented and will revert to Central Council with detailed proposals later this year. If approved, and if changes in rule required to facilitate the change are accepted at next year's Congress, it is envisaged that the calendar year would operate from 2016.

It was also agreed that the National CCCC should have the overall responsibility of coordinating all fixtures at National, Provincial, County, Club, Third Level and Schools and to this end it will work with the various bodies in the production of co-ordinated fixtures plans.

Also approved was the committee's proposal to re-launch the Inter-Provincial Football championship while Central Council also accepted the FRC suggestion that a National Strategy for less successful counties should be drawn up, guided by a National Steering Group chaired by the Director-General and with a membership drawn from all the relevant stakeholders.

Central Council turned down the proposals to re-vamp the Provincial Football championships into groups of eight and to abolish the semi-finals in the Allianz Football league Division One.
