CORK Women’s FC and Castlebar Celtic produced a thrilling 3-3 in the Bus Éireann Women’s National League today at Turner’s Cross.
The visitors took an early lead when the lively Shaunagh Jackon opened the scoring with a fine strike but Cork levelled through a stunning volley from Sarah O’Donovan.
Emma Mullin headed Castlebar in front when she connected with a good cross by Sarah Rowe and Celtic extended their lead when Jackson fired home after good build-up play involving Sarah Rowe and Emma Hansberry.
Jackson almost bagged her hat-trick just before the break but hit an upright and that let off proved costly to the visitors as O’Donovan pulled one back early in the second half when she found the net with a long range effort to get Cork back in the game.
Lauren Murphy scored a brilliant equaliser for the home side when she burst out of defence and fired past Celtic keeper Amy Hopkins and it set up a grandstand finish. Lynsey McKey might have grabbed a winner for Cork but she hit the Castlebar upright and the two teams exited with a share of the points.
Champions Peamount United produced another awesome display in hammering DLR Waves 10-1 at Greenogue to extend their lead over second-placed Raheny United to eight points – these rivals will meet next week in a critical encounter.
Stephanie Roche scored an early opener for the Peas and Grace Murray made it 2-0 in the 15th minute before Sara Lawlor added a third in the 21st minute. The onslaught never dropped and Áine O’Gorman and Murray each found the net again before half-time.
The second half continued with the torrent on the DLR goal. Sara Lawlor finished off a fine move involving Murray, Julie-Ann Russell and Roche to make it 6-0 before Russell scored two more to make it 8-0.
Roche made it 9-0 with a finish from 15 yards out after connecting with a cross by Clare Kinsella then completed her hat-trick after being set up by Kinsella. Katie McCarthy got a late response for DLR Waves but it was scant consolation on a bad day at the office.
Elsewhere, a tight encounter at Ferrycarrig Park saw Maria Delahunty grab the only goal as Wexford Youths kept up their push for a top three spot with a hard-fought victory over Shamrock Rovers.
