Mayo U13 Soccer team defeat Longford in SFAI Euro Tab Cup
- Details
Mayo hosted Longford on Saturday afternoon in Milebush Park in the SFAI U.13 Euro Tab Cup, knowing that a win will bring them into contention of competing to qualify from the group. Mayo started brightly when a through ball was played to Darren Collins, who took a shot and went just narrowly wide. Mayo were soon on the attack again when Darren Collins pulled the ball back to the edge of the Longford box where James McGrath converted the cross to put Mayo 1-0 up. The home team kept up the pressure with Longford keeper, Patrick Columb made a wonderful top corner save from a Mayo free-kick. Mayo were creating a lot of chances now and Longford were under huge pressure, particularly with Darren Collins on the right wing, who was giving Longford a hard time and again he put an excellent cross into the box, which was put into the away team's net by a wonderful flick by Emmet Rowley to make it 2-0. The dominance of Mayo was such that they were retaining a lot of the possession and Longford were struggling to deal with it. Another goal came when the superb Darren Collins floated the ball into the back of the net with an overhead kick to make it 3-0. It was cruise control for the excellent Mayo side as they kept creating numerous chances before the break, with Mayo going in at half time in a commanding position.
The two teams started brightly in the second half, in which Longford were looking to nick an early goal. Mayo kept creating chances but many of them were dealt with comfortably by the Longford keeper, but he was seriously tested again and stretched to save another top corner shot. The Mayo midfield of Darren Collins, Thierry Baba, the team captain, James McGrath and Dylan Munnelly were beginning to control the aerial duel and on the ground. Captain Thierry Baba played a brilliant ball to Mikey Lavelle who scooped the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net to make it 4-0. The Mayo defence of keeper, Luke McNicholas, Oisin Mullen, Liam Whyte, Brian Walsh and Pat Lambert had little to do in the second half, owing to the dominance of the Mayo midfield. Dylan Munnelly won the ball in the middle of the pitch and made a clever run before hitting the ball like a rocket into the back of the net to wrap up a comprehensive 5-0 win. The introduction of Eoin Prendergast, Cian McAllister, Dylan Prendergast, Niall Barrett and Dara Ludden all played their part in the game. It was a comfortable win for Mayo and it sets them up nicely for the home tie against Roscommon, where a home win will be enough, provided that Galway fail to beat Longford.
