Sligo GAA pay respect to a former great

Sligo GAA is deeply saddened to learn of the death in Letterkenny of Danny McHugh, one of Sligo's outstanding footballers of the 1960's. Danny played Senior Football for Sligo from 1964 to 1969, giving many memorable performances. He was a very talented forward and many supporters will recall particularly the goal he scored against the reigning All-Ireland Champions Galway in the 1965 Connacht Final at Tuam Stadium, a game Sligo narrowly lost. He was also a member of the Sligo team that played Kildare in the 1968 National Football League semi-final replay at Croke Park, a game in which he scored 1-1. In club football Danny played with his native Cliffoney, winning a North Divisional Junior Championship in 1963 alongside his brothers Jackie, Gus and Liam, before narrowly losing the County Final to Bunninadden. He also played for the famous St. Joseph's Bundoran/Ballyshannon team, playing with Brian McEniff and many other notable Donegal footballers.
Sligo GAA extends deepest sympathy to Danny's wife Josephine, sons Declan, Brendan and Conor, daughter Jacqueline, his mother Mary, sisters Goretti Horgan, Caroline Burns and Marie McKeon, brothers Jackie, Brendan, Liam and Mícheál, grandchildren Maggie Kate, Seán Daniel, Kitty Rose and Danny.
