South Sligo Spokes Cycling Club (SSS CC) has taken on a unique challenge for 2013. The club will attempt to cycle ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’, or less! The challenge, likened to that of the well know Jules Verne classic novel with central character Phileas Fogg, is certainly grabbing the attention locally. There will not be any air miles accumulated however, with terra firma the chosen track!
To be precise, the circumference of the globe is 40,075km and the club’s target is to cover this distance over a period stretching from February to October this year. With sufficient volunteers, fifteen at minimum, this is achievable in roughly 38 weeks. There has been great interest to date and with an average of two cycling dates per week, if the volunteers achieve 1055km a week amongst them, the target will be met.
The aim of the challenge, along with providing a focus and goal for members, is to act as an attraction for new recruits to the club. Cycling is a rapidly growing sport and leisure activity and no less in the south Sligo region. The club is now well established in the area and organise weekly spins of varying lengths to suit all levels of fitness. The club’s mission is ‘For Fitness, Recreation and Fun’.
All are welcome, from the leisurely to the more serious sports enthusiasts. Contact:
