DLR Waves 2 Peamount United 0
Shamrock Rovers 0 Wexford Youths 3
Castlebar Celtic 3 Cork Women’s FC 0
DLR WAVES caused one of the upsets of the Bus Éireann Women’s National League when they ended champions Peamount United’s unbeaten run with a polished performance at Jackson Park.
Peamount’s defeat knocked them off the top of the table as Wexford Youths moved to the summit with their victory over Shamrock Rovers.
DLR Waves recorded their third win in four games thanks to Carla Moran’s double.
“We played very well. We really went strong at them. We pressed them hard and didn’t give them a minute,” said DLR Waves coach Larry Mahoney.
“We had pressure but we were set up fir it. Our centre-back Alison Brien and Niamh Connolly were absolutely brilliant.
“It was a brilliant win for us. I cannot overstate just how hard the girls worked to achieve this result. It was an unbelievably hard working performance from everyone.
“We followed our game plan perfectly and I don't think Peamount got in behind us once in the whole game, I felt that we were well in control.
“To people outside of our team this may seem to be a shock result, but I feel that this has been coming for quite a while. The girls got what their determination deserved. They followed the plan and it was great to get three points against a quality Peamount side.”
Moran's first goal came in the 18th minute when Marie Gallagher's shot was parried by Peamount keeper Linda Meehan and her second goal came with 20 minutes left when Moran raced onto a ball over the top and fired across goal in the bottom corner.
Meanwhile, Rianna Jarrett was the standout player for Wexford Youths as they ran out comfortable winners over Shamrock Rovers at IT Tallaght to go top of the league.
The powerful striker put the visitors ahead in the second minute when she burst through on goal and slotted past keeper Sarah Devlin.
Jarrett turned provider for Ashling Frawley to make it 2-0 in the 12th minute as Frawley collected a 20-yard pass from Jarrett before firing home from outside the box.
The Hoops were fortunate to see a Jarrett strike rattle the crossbar minutes later with Devlin making an impressive save from the rebound.
Ciara Rossiter extended that lead in the 54th minute when she cut in from left to fire home with her right foot and Jarrett was later denied by an upright as the three points went back to the Model County.
Out west Castlebar Celtic shrugged off Cork Women's FC challenge with Emma Mullin grabbing a brace.
A Katie Walsh free kick put Celtic in front early on and Mullin added a second on the stroke of half-time.
The visitors spurned opportunities after the restart before Mullin sealed the deal with a smashing finish as Celtic prevailed.
