Man remanded in custody following court appearance over aggravated burglary

A man in his 20s arrested by Gardaí following an aggravated burglary at a house in Ballinasloe, Co Galway in the early hours of yesterday morning, has been remanded in custody following a court appearance in Loughrea this morning.

The incident happened shortly before 2am yesterday, at a house on Jubilee Street in the town.

A man force his way into the home of an 80-year-old man and assaulted him. The raider forced the man to go with him to a bank machine on Dunlo Street, where he tried to force the victim to withdraw cash. A member of the public who happened to be passing, intervened and the raider ran away.

Some time later in a follow up operation Gardaí arrested a man in his 20s.

The victim was taken to Portiuncula Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and has since been released.

Gardaí are asking anyone who was in the Jubilee Street or Dunlo Street areas of Ballinasloe between 2am and 3am yesterday morning, to contact them at Ballinasloe Garda Station on 090 9631890.

The man has been remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday August 3rd.
