Property developer ordered to take down 'Stonehenge' like building on Achill Island

The Stonehenge like building, erected by property developer Joe McNamara on Achill Island, must be taken down after the High Court yesterday lifted a stay on a earlier demolition order.

The structure was erected on a hilltop overlooking Pollagh in Achill, despite attempts by Mayo County Council to halt the work.

Mayo County Council yesterday warned that the building must be taken down or there will be serious consequences.

In March the High Court put a stay on an order requiring the structure to be taken down pending the outcome of an An Bord Plenála appeal. This week An Bord Plenála ruled against Mr McNamara and found that the strucutre did require planning permission.
