Changes in school transport scheme causing huge concern in areas of Mayo, says local TD

Changes in the school transport system are causing huge concern in areas of Mayo – according to local Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony.

The “Closest School Rule” means families in some cases are being split up, with members of one family being forced to go to different schools, as pupils are only eligible for transport if they’re attending the secondary school nearest to them.

The situation has caused huge anger in Ballycory, where around 30 local children attend school in Belmullet – there are also similar situations in Kilkelly, Balla and Ballinrobe.

Deputy John O’Mahony raised the issue with the Minister of State at the Department of Education Ciaran Cannon ahead of the Dail summer break, and says the planned school transport changes are of huge concern across the county…..
