Mayo's population increases by 5.5% since 2006 Census

The population of Co Mayo has increased by 5.5% over the past 5 years – that’s according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office in part 1 of the results of Census 2011.
Since the last census in 2006, the population of Mayo has risen from 123,839 to 130,638 last April.
It’s an almost 50 / 50 breakdown of males and females, with just over 65,000 people of each gender living in Co Mayo – the number of males slightly outnumbers females – which is a reversal of the national trend.
Across the province of Connaught, all counties have seen population increases over the past 5 years.
The population of county Galway has risen by 10%, while Galway city saw an increase of just over 4%, with over 75,000 people now living in the city.
Co Roscommon has seen a 9% increase in population, which now stands at 64,065 .
Sligo’s population is up by 7.4%.
