Despite a community campaign to retain the Garda station in Mulranny, the station is set to close this week, according to local councillor Michael McNamara.

He claims the Garda located in Mulranny is also being moved to another garda region, and says this is a double blow for the Mulranny area, which sees a surge in visitor numbers during the summer months.

Mulranny is one of four Mayo Garda stations which Justice Minister Alan Shatter announced would close this year, as part of budget cutbacks.

This led to a local campaign in Mulranny to try and retain the Garda station, but Councillor McNamara says the battle is over, and the closure will go ahead….
