MEP Formally Requests EU Commission to Cut Padraig Flynn's EU Pension
- Details
Labour MEP Nessa Childers has formally requested the European Commission to enforce its Code of Conduct, and cut off the EU pension of former Commissioner, Padraig Flynn.
The MEP claims that the former Irish Commissioner, Padraig Flynn has disgraced Ireland's good name in Europe and says he should no longer receive his sizable pension from the European Commission.
She believes that "Under the Commission's own Code of Conduct, a former Commissioner has at all times a "duty to behave with integrity" and if not, can be "deprived of his right to a pension". These rules, she suggests, should also be enforced retroactively and from now on only people of unquestioned integrity should be appointed as Commissioner.
In 1993 Padraig Flynn retired from Irish politics and was Ireland's European Commissioner until 1999. He would have a substantial pension arising from this time.
MEP Childers has confirmed today that she has “formally requested the European Commission end his EU pension."
