Mahon Tribunal says Tom Gilmartin donation to Padraig Flynn used in part to buy Mayo farm

The final report of the Mahon tribunal, published today, has rejected Bertie Ahern's version of the source of his finances.

While it stops short of making a finding of corruption against the former Taoiseach, it says he failed to truthfully account for the source of lodgements made to his bank account.

It also says that because of that, the tribunal has not been able to identify where the money came from.

Judge Alan Mahon also says that much of the explanation provided by Mr Ahern about his funds was deemed by his tribunal to be untrue.

The Mahon Tribunal report also concludes that a number of senior political figures accepted corrupt payments in relation to planning.

It says former Minister and European Commissioner Padraig Flynn and former TD Liam Lawlor - were among those to seek inappropriate payments.

The Mahon Tribunal says Padraig Flynn - in his capacity as a Government Minister - wrongfully and corruptly sought a substantial donation of money from property developer Tom Gilmartin - purportedly for the benefit of the Fianna Fail party.

But the 50,000 punts payment - made in late May/early June 1989 - was used by the former EU Commissoner to buy a farm in Co Mayo in the name of his wife Dorothy.
