Heavy fog lingering in inland areas, with Status Orange fog warning in place until early Friday morning

Heavy fog and black ice led to treacherous driving conditions across the region this morning, while the dense fog is lingering in many areas this lunchtime, including the Castlebar area.

A number of minor collisions were reported across counties Mayo and Galway this morning due to black ice.

Mayo County Council says roads across the county were not gritted last night, based on forecasts received yesterday by the local authority.

Roads were not gritted early this morning either, however, when reports began to emerge of dangerous road conditions in various parts of the country, the council responded later in the morning and sent gritters to some of the more problematic areas.

The heavy fog is lingering in many areas, and Met Eireann has issued a status orange fog warning for the entire country, warning that fog with very poor visibility will continue to linger in many inland areas this afternoon and will become more extensive and dense this evening and for a time tonight.

The status orange fog warning remains in place until 2 am tomorrow morning.

Further frost is also likely across the West tonight, as temperatures fall to between zero and three degrees.

Windy and wet weather will move into the region tomorrow.
