Burglaries in the West down by 25% in November & December

The number of burglaries in the Western region fell by 25% during November and December, under the Winter phase of Operation Thor – according to new Garda figures.

While a rise in burglaries was experienced across the country for a number of months up to October 2017, the first two months of the winter phase of Operation Thor saw the level of burglaries reported nationally decreasing by 23% and by 25% in the West.

Gardai say a surge in burglaries is likely in winter months, when daylight hours are at the lowest level, but a key part of Operation Thor has been targeting organised crime gangs involved in burglaries, and in recent weeks a number of these gang members have been arrested where high-powered getaway vehicles were identified and intercepted.

Gardai say the public have a crucial role to play in preventing burglaries – people are advised to lock up and light up as most burglaries occur between 5pm and 11pm in winter months, with over half of burglaries taking place through either the front or back door.
