HSE Advises Measures that the Public Can Take to Reduce Incidents of Flu Spreading

As the flu epidemic is expected to peak over the next number of days, there are measures that the general public can take to avoid spreading the virus.

Dr Regina Kiernan is a Public Health Officer with the HSE West, speaking to Midwest News today she advocates getting the flu vaccine, staying at home if you are experiencing flu like symptoms rather than spreading the virus in workplaces or classrooms, and ensure that you cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing.

Most people with flu symptoms recover in 2-7 days and  antibiotics do not work against the flu virus.

There are three strains of the virus prevalent at present, and while not all of the strains are covered by the flu vaccine, it does reduce your chances of contracting the flu.
