Almost 100% increase in number of motorists arrested for drink-driving over the festive season, compared to same period last year
There was an increase of almost 100% in the number of arrests for drink/driving in Co Mayo over the festive season, compared to the same period a year ago.
Between the 8th December and the 5th January (last Friday) , 33 drivers in the Mayo Garda Division were arrested for drink/driving, compared to 19 in 2016.
The arrests occurred across the county.
Meanwhile, there was an increase of almost 35% last year in the number of drink-driving arrests in Mayo, compared to 2016.
Gardai believe drink-driving is a contributory factor in many road deaths - and while the number of people fatally injured in road collisions was down nationally last year, there was a significant increase in Mayo – with 13 people fatally injured on the county’s roads.
