An event will take place in Loughglynn this Friday night, following on from the unveiling of a monument at Shannon’s Cross this Summer in memory of two Gardai who lost their lives while on duty in 1980.
Mayo natives Detective Garda John Morley and Garda Henry Byrne –both stationed in Castlerea – were shot dead while responding to a bank robbery in Ballaghadereen in July 1980.
They died when the getaway car and Garda patrol car collided at Shannon’s Cross, and on 28th July this year, a monument in memory of the two Gardai was unveiled, which was attended by members of the Morley and Byrne families.
Members of An Garda Siochana, GAA clubs in Roscommon and Mayo and the local community contributed to the memorial.
Money left over from that fund is being donated to the Mayo/ Roscommon Hospice, and will be handed over at a public function this Friday night in the Village Inn, Loughglynn at 10pm.
