IFA says Minister to set up Working Group to examine fodder crisis in the West

The Agriculture Minister Michael Creed met with the IFA yesterday, and has asked the farming organisation to take part in a new Working Group to examine the extent of the fodder crisis.

Many farmers along the western seaboard are facing serious fodder shortages, following poor weather conditions in the Summer and Autumn, and farming groups have been calling on the Minister to announce a fodder aid package for those affected.

Hundreds of farmers attended meetings held in Claremorris and Sligo last Friday night, organised by the IFA and INHFA respectively, to highlight the extent of the fodder crisis.

The Mayo IFA Chairman Martin Gilvarry says Minister Creed now recognises that the issue is a serious one for many farmers in areas of the West & Northwest, and he’s setting up a new Working Group- involving farming organisations, Teagasc and the milling companies -  to report back to him on the extent of the crisis, and on how best to assist the farmers affected…..
