The highest honour for bravery is being awarded to the late Garda Tony Golden

The highest honour for bravery is being awarded to Garda Tony Golden, who was shot dead two years ago as he defended a young woman after she had been attacked by her partner.

The Ballina native was in uniform and unarmed when dissident republican Adrian Crevan Mackin opened fire with a handgun, fatally injuring the garda and critically wounding the woman, Siobhan Phillips.

A total of seven gardaĆ­ will be awarded Scott gold medals at a special ceremony at the Garda College in Templemore, on Friday.
