There are calls for a full investigation after the Big Wheel stopped working last night at the opening of Galway's Christmas Market.
Emergency services had to assist a number of people stranded in freezing temperatures, when the big wheel stalled at the city’s Christmas market.
The incident occurred shortly after the Christmas market lights were switched on.
It’s understood up to 20 people were stranded in the higher cabs, and Galway Fire Brigade used cherrypickers to provide blankets to occupants of the cabs during the rescue effort.
Staff ratcheted the wheel to take people out of the cabs at ground level over a period of two-and-a half hours, and all those rescued were offered paramedic assistance.
Galway City Councillor Pádraig Conneely, says he was against the Big Wheel from the start, and he wants it to remain closed pending an inquiry…..
