Mayo Sinn Fein Councillor Thérése Ruane is stepping away from public life.
The Connacht Telegraph is reporting that the Castlebar-based Councillor is to vacate her seat on Mayo County Council within the coming weeks, citing work and other commitments as the reason for her decision.
Thérése was first elected to Mayo County Council and Castlebar Town Council at the 2009 local elections – but had previously served on the town council after being co-opted to replace her party colleague Noel Campbell.
She retained her seat on Mayo County Council in the 2014 election.
Last year, Councillor Ruane took up a position with Tusla, the child & family agency, and indicated to her party that she would be stepping down as an elected representative from the end of this year.
It’s understood she will continue to be a member of Sinn Fein, but is departing from active political life.
