Extensive Damage Caused to a Fishing Trawler at Purteen Harbour in Keel

15,000 euro worth of damage was caused to one boat and 5 other vessels were burgled at Purteen Harbour Keel, Achill in the early hours of yesterday morning

A fishing trawler sank after its deck pump was stolen, causing damage to a 36 foot vessel owned by an Achill fisherman.

The value of the property stolen from the boats is not described as substantial, but when the deck pump from the fishing trawler was removed, the attached pipe was also cut. As a result when the tide came in water started to pour into the boat and it was quickly submerged.

When the trawler’s owner arrived at the boat at 8.30 am yesterday morning he discovered the mess.

Gerry Hassett of the Purteen Harbour Fisherman’s Group told Midwest News this morning that lights, oil skins and other items were taken from the 6 vessels, but he said the damage done to the fishing trawler has major consequences for the livelihoods of two families.

Gardai are examing CCTV around the area for any suspicious activity.

Anyone who noticed anything unusual around Purteen harbour in the early hours of yesterday (Monday) morning is asked to contact either Achill or Westport garda stations
