Need to enforce noxious weed act highlighted by Ballina Councillor

The need to enforce the noxious weed act that demands that landowners deal with ragwort/ buachalains and other noxious weeds on land was highlighted this week by Ballina based Independent Councillor Gerry Ginty at the monthly meeting of Ballina Municipal District.

The councillor said the legislation is in place since the 1930s, to deal with noxious weeds, but the problem he said, is that no one is enforcing it.

He called on the Minister for Agriculture to update the act and ensure that the penalty for not complying with it is increased to make it a deterrent.

He said ragwort can be seen at present thriving on both private and public land, and apart from how it looks, should a horse or other farm animals consume it, it can kill them.
