Mobile theatres may be brought into Merlin Park hospital to tackle backlog of orthopaedic surgeries

The Saolta Hospital Group is considering a number of options for carrying out orthopaedic surgery, as two operating theatres at Merlin Park Hospital in Galway remain closed.

The theatres were closed last month, due to leaks in the roof, and a number of orthopaedic procedures are being cancelled every week as a result.

Consultants from Merlin Park Hospital and Saolta management met with the Health Minister Simon Harris yesterday to discuss the issue.

The Minister was told that design work is underway for a 3-storey elective surgery unit at Merlin Park, which would incorporate an endoscopy unit, orthopaedic theatres and facilities for day surgery.

While this is a longer-term plan, mobile theatres may be brought into Merlin Park as a short-term measures to get orthopaedic surgery back up and running.

Galway West TD Hildegarde Naughten, who arranged yesterday’s meeting with Minister Simon Harris, told Midwest News this evening that using private hospitals and University Hospital Galway may also be part of the short-term solution to the current crisis…….
