Gardai investigating suspected ISIS terror cell in the west of Ireland
- Details
Gardaí are investigating a suspected ISIS terror cell in the West of Ireland.
It's believed to be headed up by two Chechen brothers who've been living here for several years.
They're accused of using An Post and other courier services for 'dummy runs' to send items to the Middle East.
The Irish Independent says the cell is also suspected of fundraising from here and transferring money to extremist organisations. The group is being monitored by detectives based in Galway but the Special Detective Unit’s Counter Terrorism International Unit is also aware of the suspected terror cell’s activities and it is understood that international authorities are too.
The group’s leaders – the two brothers – have been questioned in in the past by Gardai, they have not yet been arrested for any terrorist offences.
