The proposed Newport sewage treatment plant will be operating within five years.
This was revealed yesterday at a meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District which was held in Aughagower.
Cllr. Brendan Mulroy has welcomed this news and while he says five years may seem like a long time but at the end of the day at least Irish Water recognises the serious situation at play in Newport.
Cllr. Mulroy says he made a pre-election promise that he would fight really hard to get a sewage treatment plant in to Newport.
