Westport named Ireland's Tidiest Large Town at 2017 Tidy Towns awards

Westport has been named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town at the 2017 Tidy Towns awards, which were announced this afternoon at The Helix in Dublin.
Tidy Towns groups and committees from across the country travelled to Dublin for the event.
Westport first won the county award, then the regional award and gold medal award, and was then named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town.
Birdhill in County Tipperary won the overall award, and was named Ireland's Tidiest Town for 2017.
Clonakilty in Co Cork was named Ireland's Tidiest Small Town, while Ennis in County Clare was again declared Ireland's Tidiest Large Urban Centre.
Meanwhile, Pat Scahill of Westport Tidy Towns Committee won the overall Supervalu Community Hero award.
These awards celebrate the efforts of 10 Supervalu Community Heroes across Ireland who act as exemplary members of their community, and Pat was nominated by Liam Campion of Supervalu on Shop Street in Westport to his commitment to enhancing his local community.
Elsewhere in Co Mayo, there were silver medal awards for Castlebar and Belmullet, and bronze medals for Ballina and Mulranny Tidy Towns, while Shrule won an Endeavour Award, for showing the greatest improvement on last year.
