Galway native takes over as acting Garda Commissioner

Following the departure of Noirín O’Sullivan from the top job in An Garda Siochana, a Galway man has become the acting Garda Commissioner.
Dónall Ó Cualáin, a native of Carna, speaks fluent Irish and has served as Sergeant in the Aran Islands before rising through the ranks as inspector, superintendent and Chief Superintendent over the Galway division.
In July 2012 he was appointed to the post of assistant commissioner in charge of the western region, and was appointed to deputy Commissionr two years later.
