Roscommon-Galway Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has not ruled out contesting the next Presidential election.
President Michael D Higgins was elected President of Ireland in October 2011 and indicated at that time that he would serve just one term, which will end late next year.
However, it’s understood Mr Higgins may now be considering a second term, and it’s believed many of the political parties would be willing to allow him stand unopposed, which would mean no election contest taking place.
Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice, who openly admits he’s not a supporter of Michael D Higgins, says it’s important in a democracy that there would be a contest for the Presidency.
