St Nathy’s Cathedral in Ballaghereen is to close next month for six months, to facilitate an extensive refurbishment programme.
Built in the 1850’s, the Cathedral for the Diocese of Achonry now requires up to 1 million euro in refurbishment works, and the project is being planned for over a decade.
Despite the Cathedral being a listed building, there’s little State funding available for such works, so a fundraising campaign has been undertaken in parishes across the Diocese.
The work will get underway in late September, and the Cathedral is expected to reopen in March.
In the meantime, Masses will be held in St Nathy’s College Chapel, while funerals will be accommodated in other churches in the parish.
However, the Cathedral is expected to open for two weeks over the Christmas and New Year period.
