"Mrs Doyle" kidnapped in Mayo

A road safety campaign using Mrs Doyles life-sized cardboard cutout signs to alert drivers and GAA fans to take a break over the bank holiday weekend has had the signs stolen in Mayo.

Sign vandalism is nothing new, but the taking of road safety awareness campaign signs is.
Mayo County Council had teamed up with An Garda Siochana to organise the road safety campaign. The campaign has been given thumbs up by Pauline McLynn who played the part as Mrs Doyle in father ted and also by the production company Hat Trick productions LTD which produced FR ted which gave the road safety office of Mayo County Council a licence to use the images. The road signs of Mrs Doyle (Fr Ted) were erected around the County which had road safety slogans on them in an effort to remind drivers to freshen up by taking a break and to think about the consequences that driving tired.
Driver fatigue is said to be a contributory factor in as many as 1 in 5 driver deaths in Ireland

Noel Gibbons Road safety officer said “Unfortunately the signs were stolen within 4 or 5 hours after they were erected, the campaign still continues we want to make road users aware of driver fatigue. The signs help make drivers aware of driver fatigue and contribute towards making local communities safer, but won't lose sleep over it these signs been removed “

The signs have been taken from the N5 near Turlough on the Castlebar Road and the N17 near Ireland West Airport Knock.
