Irish water says it has no responsibility for the water supply at Murrisk, Croagh Patrick

Irish water says it has no responsibility for the water supply at Murrisk, Croagh Patrick.

Earlier this week independent councillor Christy Hyland raised his concerns at the west Mayo Municipal District meeting about the water quality at Croagh Patrick and in the busy tourist village of Murrisk.

Cllr Hyland said that on Reek Sunday last there was a sign in the carpark at the base of the mountain that clearly stated – do not drink the water – the water is not fit for human consumption.

With in excess of 120,000 visitors to Croagh Patrick annually, the Westport based councillor says that the situation is completely unacceptable.

Midwest News contacted Irish Water and asked why that sign is at the base of Croagh Patrick and what, if any, plans has Irish Water to address the water supply in Murrisk.

We received a single sentence response from the water utility company stating “this isn’t a public scheme so Irish Water doesn’t have responsibility for it”.

Councillor Hyland told Midwest News today that it’s an extraordinary answer from the utility company set up to look after the country’s water supply.

He asked does Irish water expect the people of Murrisk to provide a public water supply at a national pilgrimage site?

He has called on Mayo county Council to contact Irish Water and to solve the problem.
