Memorial Mass held in Castlebar for David Gavin who drowned in Canada

Club, college, and county football jerseys together with a passport showing David Gavin’s love of travel and sport, were among the gifts that were brought to the altar today for his Memorial Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary Castlebar.

The church was overflowing with mourners for the 26-year old Breaffy GAA man from Moneen, Bradagh, Castlebar who drowned in British Colombia on the last day of June.

He hasn’t been found since he got into difficulty after diving into a Canadian river.

While the official search was called off five days later, a private search is continuing, with assistance from funds raised in Ireland and Canada.

David had moved to Canada with his girlfriend, Ciera earlier this year.

David’s parents Michael and Angela, his sister Aoife, girlfriend Ciera  and extended family were joined by hundreds of people in Castlebar this morning for the Memorial Mass

Chief Celebrant Fr John McCormack from Breaffy described David as gifted, and said he lived life to the full.

He thanked David’s parents for bringing him into the world.

He said there are no answers to "what went wrong" on the day. David he said, an able swimmer, had often jumped from such a height before.

A number of football jerseys were among the gifts brought to the altar – including the jersey from his local club Breaffy, the Mayo jersey - as David has played for the county at minor level, his NUI College jersey, and the jersey of his most recent club ISSC Vancouver.

At the end of the Mass, David’s Uncle thanked everyone for what he described as the overwhelming response since the tragedy and the ongoing search efforts.

The search for David is continuing in Canada.
