Visitors to Croagh Patrick advised not to drink water

The current situation where visitors to Murrisk and Croagh Patrick are advised not to drink the water has been described as disgraceful by Westport-based Independent Councillor Christy Hyland.

A sign erected by Mayo County Council at the foot of Croagh Patrick urges pilgrims not to drink the water, as it’s not fit for human consumption.

Homes and businesses in the Murrisk area are also supplied with untreated water from the mountain – despite promises that the Lough Mask water scheme would be extended to Murrisk and Lecanvey.

Councillor Hyland says it’s not acceptable, with up to 150,000 people climbing Croagh Patrick each year, and he asks how can cottage industries be developed in the area without a good water supply.
