All-purpose sports stadium needed in the West of Ireland, says Roscommon-Galway TD

A major sports stadium that could host GAA, rugby and soccer matches as well as hosting major concerts – should be developed in the West of Ireland.

That’s according to Roscommon-Galway Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice who raised the matter at a Dail Committee yesterday, that was discussing Ireland’s Rugby World Cup bid.

While Castlebar’s MacHale Park and Pearse Stadium in Galway are                                                                                        on the list to host games if Ireland was successful in hosting the Rugby World Cup, Deputy Fitzmaurice says there are traffic problems – particularly with Pearse Stadium in Salthill, and he says the West of Ireland needs a major sports stadium that could also host concerts and conferences.

The Independent TD has suggested that the derelict Galway Airport site could be developed for this purpose….
