There are 10 Fine Gael councillors in Mayo with a vote for the new leader of Fine Gael. Midwest News contacted all 10 today, and at this point only three stated their intention.
Ballinrobe based Patsy O’Brien Ballyhaunis’s John Cribben and Tom Connolly of Claremorris are firmly behind Leo Varadkar.
The other councillors we managed to speak to say they are still listening to both sides and will decide later.
However, it’s understood that it is likely that Leo Varadkar will take the majority of the councillor vote in Mayo and indications at this early stage also suggest Galway Fine Gael councillors are backing Leo.
Yesterday Mayo Senators Michelle Mulherrin and Paddy Burke backed Varadkar while John O’Mahony is in the Coveney camp.
Minister Michael Ring told Midwest News yesterday that he will declare his intention tomorrow, but it’s widely thought that he will opt for Varadkar- the two worked together in Sport and Tourism in the last Government. Varadkar was the senior minister and Michael Ring the Junior and they reportedly worked well together.
We are awaiting a response from the Taoiseach’s office - to see if Enda is declaring his preference for his successor.
The Taoiseach is in London today for a number of engagements including a speech to the Ireland Funds Great Britain group.
The address is taking place this lunchtime in the city centre where the Taoiseach is also meeting members of the Global Irish Network and clients of Enterprise Ireland.
