Tributes paid to the late Loretta Clarke from Ballina
- Details
Tributes are being paid following the death of Loretta Clarke from Ballina.
Loretta was sister of the late Jackie Clarke, who, in his lifetime, amassed a huge collection of material relating to historical figures such as Wolfe Tone, Michael Collins, Douglas Hyde, Michael Davitt and leading Fenian O'Donovan Rossa.
The collection, which also includes personal items associated with the leaders of the 1916 Rising, is housed in Ballina and is considered the most important private collection of Irish historical material in public hands.
Loretta Clarke extensively researched the role played by women in Irish Republican history – during the 1916 Rising and subsequent events.
Loretta also stood as an independent candidate in the Mayo constituency in the 2011 general election, as she felt the needs of the elderly were not a priority.
She passed away this morning in hospital at the age of 83.
Loretta was pre-deceased by her husband Gerry, and is survived by her brother Ian and extended family.
Funeral arrangements have been confirmed for the late Loretta Clarke.
Funeral service will take place on Thursday at 12.30 in St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina which will be followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery.
