The search operation for three crew members from a missing helicopter is continuing off the north Mayo coast this afternoon.
Coast Guard Rescue 116 went down in the early hours of Tuesday morning off Blacksod.
The crash claimed the life of Capt Dara Fitzpatrick, while searches are continuing for three of the helicopter’s crew – Capt Mark Duffy, and winchmen Paul Ormsby and Ciaran Smith.
A signal from the helicopter's black box was picked up yesterday afternoon, and investigators hope it will lead them to the suspected crash site.
Today’s search is focused on homing in on the signal that was detected yesterday, in the hope of locating the black box recorder and the wreckage of the rescue helicopter, while the main focus is recovering the bodies of the missing crewmen.
However, the site scan operation that was underway in the area around Blackrock Lighthouse has had to be abandoned in the past hour, due to deteriorating weather conditions.
