The funeral will take place today of former Bishop of Galway Eamon Casey, who passed away on Monday in a nursing home in Co Clare.
Last night, retired Bishop of Galway Martin Drennan said Bishop Eamonn Casey made mistakes in life for which he paid a high price.
Bishop Drennan was speaking as he welcomed Bishop Casey’s remains into Galway Cathedral.
Up to 1,000 people joined a large number of diocesan priests, close relatives and friends last night at Galway Cathedral for a prayer service.
Relatives of the former Bishop of Galway and Kerry travelled from all over the country to pay their last respects to their family member – among them were nephews and nieces along with grand-nephews and grand-nieces of the 79-year-old former bishop.
But neither Bishop Casey’s son, Peter, nor his former companion, Annie Murphy, travelled from the USA for the funeral.
It was the revelation in 1992 that Bishop Casey had fathered a son with Ms Murphy, back in 1974, which led to his abrupt resignation as Bishop of Galway.
His Funeral Mass will take place at 2pm this afternoon, followed by internment in the Cathedral crypt.
