A ping signal from the blackbox flight recorder from Rescue helicopter 116 has been located this evening.
A massive air, sea and shoreline search has been ongoing off the Mayo coast since the Dublin-based Coast Guard helicopter disappeared from radar screens in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Captain Dara Fitzpatrick was confirmed dead yesterday, while crew members Mark Duffy, Paul Ormsby and Ciaran Smith are still missing.
Members of the Air Corps, coastguard, navy and Gardai are all involved in the search operation, along with Civil Defence and local volunteers.
Jurgen Whyte, Chief Aeronautical Officer with the Air Accident Investigation Unit, says the location of a signal from the helicopter’s black box recorder is very significant, and the families of the missing crew have been informed of the development.
