It’s emerged that the pilot who died yesterday following the helicopter tragedy off the Mayo coast had family connections in the Cong area of Co Mayo.
Captain Dara Fitzpatrick died after being recovered from the sea off Blacksod.
Her maternal grandmother Mary Mulholland was a native of Cong - she came from Clarke’s Public house in the village.
Dara’s mother is Mary Fitzpatrick nee Mulholland and is a cousin of Peter Fahy who lives in Cong village.
Mr Fahy told Midwest News today that a number of Dara’s relatives still live in the Cong area and are mourning her tragic loss.
He described Dara as a bubbly personality, always in great form and always had the best to say about others and was committed to a dangerous career.
This evening, the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association has issued a statement, expressing condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the crew of 'Rescue 116'.
The association says the decorated crew of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, Captain Mark Duffy, Ciarán Smith and Paul Ormsby paid the ultimate price in their service to the State and the people of Ireland should be proud to have men and women like the crew of 'Rescue 116' watching over them.
