Egyptian President will give pardon to Ibrahim Halawa once trial is over, says Galway West TD

The Egyptian President has said he will intervene to ensure that Ibrahim Halawa is released and returned to Ireland once his trial concludes.

That’s according to Galway West Independent TD Noel Grealish, who’s part of a cross-party deputation from the Dail who travelled to Cairo this week to highlight his case.

21-year old Ibrahim Halawa has been in prison awaiting trial for three and a half years, after being arrested at a mosque in Cairo in 2013 during a political protest.

He and 493 others are awaiting a mass trial, which has been repeatedly adjourned.

The group of TDs led by the Ceann Comhairle met with the Dubliner on Tuesday, and discussed his case yesterday with the Egyptian President in Cairo.

Deputy Grealish told Midwest News that President el-Sisi will not interfere while the judicial process is ongoing, but has said will give Mr Halawa a pardon once the trial has concluded….
