Government, the EU and the UN Must provide the Resources Needed to House Syrian Refugees in Ballaghaderreen -According to Irish Times Columnist
Ballaghaderreen native and columnist with the Irish Times Patsy McGarry yesterday stated in the paper that here was no need for Minister David Stanton to apologise at the weekend for leaving it so late to let the people of Ballaghaderreen know that the former Abbeyfield Hotel in the town is to become a reception centre for Syrian refugees.
He wrote “many in the town believe consultation would have been a disaster. It would merely have provided a platform for the naysayers who are always with us. Everywhere. They would have sown bitter division, prolonged an agony, prevented agreement”.
This afternoon he told Midwest News why he believes the Minister is not to blame for the development, but rather big business saw an opportunity and provided the government with a facility that the state needs to fulfil its promise to accommodate 4,000 refugees in this country.
He is insisting that government, the EU and the UN must provide the resources needed to successfully accommodate the Syrian refugees in the town.
