Questions remain to be answered over decision to locate over 80 Syrian refugees in Ballaghaderreen according to local TD
A Roscommon TD says there are still questions that need to be answered over the decision to relocate over 80 Syrian refugees in Ballaghaderreen.
Independent Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice was among the local public representatives who attended a meeting with Minister Stanton and Department officials yesterday at Leinster over the decision not to inform the people about the project at the former Abbeyfield Hotel prior to the news emerging last week.
Deputy Fitzmaurice says he takes issue with the fact that the company contracted to source goods and services were not being compelled to do so locally. He says while they were informed by officials yesterday that it is usually the case that local companies are used, he is going to travel to another centre in Monasterevin and see if that is the case.
He has also pointed out that Roscommon currently does not have a child psychologist and consideration must be given to what the young children coming here have been through. The department officials said they would work with the HSE to provide a child psychologist if one was required.
However Deputy Fitzmaurice says he has proposed that by the end of February, the Oireachtas members should meet with all stakeholders to ensure the jigsaw has been put together to ensure services are delivered.
