Age Action Urge Public to Check on Elderly in Severe Weather

Age Action is urging the public to ensure their older neighbours remain safe and well during the current spell of cold weather. The organisation also advised any older person who has not yet got the flu vaccine to do so as soon as possible.

Justin Moran, Head of Advocacy and Communications with Age Action says  between 1,500 and 2,000 excess deaths occur during the winter in Ireland, compared to the summer. Many of these are older people who die as a result of respiratory illness or cardiovascular disease.

He told Midwest News today that it’s important for communities to be aware of elderly in their area in severe weather conditions.

Elderly people are advised to keep the heat on in their homes. Reduce the heat to just one or two radiators or rooms if costs are a problem and to wear an extra layer of clothing and take plenty of hot drinks.
