Motorists being warned to prepare for difficult driving conditions later today

Motorists are being warned to prepare for difficult driving conditions this morning and later today as the first big freeze of the winter is predicted.

Despite low temperatures across the west last night, there was no snow or ice, however snow has started to fall in some parts of Mayo this morning.

An orange weather warning is in place for Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal since 6pm yesterday evening and will remain in place until 6pm tomorrow evening for that area.

A lower yellow warning is in place for Galway and Roscommon, as well as Munster and Leinster from this morning.

Heavy sleet and possibly snow is expected across the northwest, with ice said to be a particular danger.
