Sleet and snow showers expected across the region from tonight

After a night of high winds across Mayo and Sligo, Met Eireann is advising that cold, wintry weather will develop from tonight onwards.

Showers will turn wintry in many places, from this evening until Saturday, with falls of sleet and snow expected. The heaviest of the snow fall is most likely over Connacht and Ulster and especially on high ground.

Showers will turn increasingly wintry across the region tonight, with sleet and snow, while frost and ice can be expected in sheltered areas, as temperatures dip below zero overnight.

Tomorrow will be a bitterly cold day across the West with sleet and snow showers.

However, Met Eireann forecaster Joan Blackburn says the cold spell won’t be too severe, and will only last a few days.

With sleet and snow showers from tonight, Mayo County Council’s Road Safety Officer is appealing to drivers to slow down, and travel at a speed appropriate to the road conditions.

Snow on the roads will reduce visibility, and increase stopping distances, so drivers should reduce their speed and be prepared for the unexpected on the road, according to Road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons.
